Student escapes unharmed in school incident

A student was unharmed when a 12-year-old boy allegedly stabbed him in the back with a sharpened toothbrush at Siegel Middle School on Thursday, an SRO sergeant said.

The seventh-grade boy showed the toothbrush to other students in a common area in front of a toilet, Sergeant Irvin Turner said.

“He made a stabbing motion and struck a student in the back,” Turner said. “The student was not injured. There was no bleeding and no skin injuries.”

The SROs charged the 12-year-old boy with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon on school property.

“We have to take these incidents extremely seriously,” Turner said. “The object he had on him could have caused serious injury.”

James Evans, chief communications officer for Rutherford County Schools, said the student was expelled under the district's zero-tolerance policy.

SRO Anthony Combs transported the boy to Rutherford County Juvenile Justice, where he awaits a hearing in juvenile court.
