“Batman” director explains why Robert Pattinson is not starring in “Penguin”

The Penguin is the second project set in Matt Reeves' dark, violent take on the DC Universe, following 2022's The Batman, in which Robert Pattinson played Bruce Wayne and Batman.

The film shows that Gotham's police and city council are corrupt, which is why the Riddler (Paul Dano) is targeting those in power.

At the end of the film, Batman discovers that some of the city's most influential people are controlled by a notorious gangster named Carmine Falcone (John Turturro).

The Riddler murdered Falcone to prove that crime doesn't always pay, but in doing so he created a power vacuum in the underworld underworld. In “The Penguin,” various gangsters, including Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell), seek to take over the Falcone empire.

This version of Batman is much more down-to-earth than other recent adaptations of the character, and he focuses more on fighting organized crime than on larger-than-life supervillains or teaming up with other heroes.

So it can be assumed that Pattinson could slip into the bat suit again for a cameo appearance in “The Penguin”.

But in September, Reeves told Total Film that he had decided against having Pattinson return as Batman in the series.

“To explore the criminal gallery, they could never get as much space as we do in a series. So Batman is only present here in the sense that he has a presence. You know that all these events started because of the Riddler, but the Riddler doesn't show up and Batman doesn't show up,” he said.

He added: “Rob will not be on the show. I'd rather take the Band-Aid off now. We've talked about all of this, but we thought the best way to do it was to do a big exploration of a guy reaching for power at this moment.”
