Emergency crews battle fire near Cedar City Airport

CEDAR CITY – Emergency crews extinguished a fire near the airport in Cedar City on Thursday.

Cedar City police said two firefighters and a civilian were taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries, but all are in stable condition. The severity of their injuries was not disclosed.

The “wildfire” first broke out around 1:45 p.m. west of Airport Road on 850 North, Cedar City police said. The fire spread “quickly” across the area and threatened several businesses.

Iron County Emergency Manager George Colson said the fire started outside the Insituform plant, which uses chemicals, which had officials concerned. The fire did not make it into the plant, but there were hardened chemicals outside that the fire burned.

Some nearby businesses were evacuated due to fire risk and five commercial buildings were damaged.

At 5:15 p.m. the fire was extinguished.

According to Utah Fire Info, an estimated 3.5 acres were affected by the fire.

The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.
