India vs Bangladesh, Live Score, 1st Test, Day 2:

India vs Bangladesh, Live Score, 1st Test, Day 2: The second new ball was available on the morning of the second day of the first Test at the Chepauk Stadium and Bangladesh took it. They desperately needed an early breakthrough and Taskin Ahmed gave them just that, edging Ravindra Jadeja behind the wicketkeeper in the third over of the day. Jadeja could not add to his overnight score of 86 and missed out on his fifth Test century, ending the score between him and Ravichandran Ashwin at 199. …Read more

Ashwin and Jadeja helped India to a top-place finish at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Thursday. They finished the first day on 339/6 at close of play and have laid a solid foundation for the second day of the Test. Early wickets will be in demand for Bangladesh's formidable pace attack, whose first new ball left India reeling at 34/3. The second new ball will be immediately available to the Tigers on the second morning and since the older ball was quite ineffective, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto will call on Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud to repeat their opening sprint and break the stand between Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin.

A seventh wicket will be India's last and Bangladesh will be keen to take those wickets early and provide good conditions to bat in once they come into their innings. The pitch on day one had plenty to offer the pacers in the first session with cooler temperatures in Chennai and good carry on the pitch. India will meanwhile be hoping that the Ashwin-Jadeja duo can take the total closer to 400 with the pair looking extremely composed in the final session. Ashwin completed his sixth Test century in the penultimate over of the day and all eyes will be on Jadeja to see if he can match his long-time spin partner's fifth century, hitting 86* overnight. With another five runs, the two will complete their 200-run partnership.

While the pitch already seems to be flattening, they will want one more round from the pacers to clear the footprints on a pitch known for its turns. Ashwin expects turns and bounces to play a role as the game progresses, which could be bad news for Bangladesh's batsmen if India's innings continues well into the second day. For India, the game plan will be fairly straightforward as they will want to make sure they play out the new ball and give themselves the opportunity to add more runs to the total. Likewise, Bangladesh will hope that the new ball allows them to stop the bleeding before they exploit the pitch advantage with the bat before it gets too out of hand.

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh got off to a rollicking start thanks to a superb opening run from Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud, who managed to keep the Indian openers calm and on the defensive from the start. Mahmud was able to take advantage of this and took three big wickets within the first hour of play. Rohit Sharma was caught at second slip by opposite number Najmul Hossain Shanto before Shubman Gill was caught on the leg side by wicketkeeper Litton Das. Mahmud made three downs for India with the big wicket, prompting Virat Kohli to fish outside the off stump and play the ball through to Das behind the stumps.

India were in trouble in the first 10 overs but Rishabh Pant was sent in at 5 to join Yashasvi Jaiswal. The pair took India through to the lunch break without further damage as both counter-attacked and punished poor throws to reach a partnership of 62 runs in 99 balls. However, Pant was out soon after the lunch break when a sluggish cut shot against Mahmud saw him forced out after a very good start, having scored 39 runs on his return to the Test team for the first time since 2022. Jaiswal kept his scoring rate up and reached his fifth Test half-century but could not consolidate as Bangladesh's young flamethrower Nahid Rana found his edge and took the left-hander out for 56 runs.

Bangladesh picked up their first wicket with spin soon after when KL Rahul fell to Mehidy Hasan Miraz at short leg after a good, sharp catch from Zakir Hasan. Bangladesh looked favourites to end the Indian batting with another wicket but as the pitch became looser and more comfortable for batting, India's old guard came together to save the day. Chennai native Ravichandran Ashwin and long-time Chennai favourite Ravindra Jadeja made full use of their familiarity with the Chepauk pitch and combined for a brilliant 195-run partnership and they are still at it. The duo attacked with spin in particular, taking down Shakib Al Hasan and scoring plenty of runs against the pacers as well.

Combining forces at 144/6, Ashwin was the main instigator as he took an attacking approach against both seamers and spinners. With the pitch waning and the older ball not doing much off the pitch, the pair scored over 5 runs per over in the final session of the day. Ashwin reached his sixth century in just 108 balls, in an innings that has seen 10 boundaries and two sixes so far.

Highlights from the second day of the second Test between India and Bangladesh in Chennai:

– India will continue at 339/6 with Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja looking to extend their 195-run partnership.

– Ashwin, who is yet to get out on 102, would like to turn this century into a daddy hundred

– His partner Jadeja is aiming for his 5th Test century

– The second new ball would be due soon and the Bangladesh Pacers would expect a repeat of the first hour of Day 1 in the hope of completing the Indian innings

– As for Team India, 400 seems to be an achievable score, enough to put Bangladesh under serious pressure.
