Witnesses describe fatal accident on I-94 and Drexel

New video from the 12 News newsroom shows debris strewn across the road on I-94 near Drexel Avenue in Oak Creek. Car parts, personal items and what appears to be a dollhouse can be seen in the video. Zamra Hughes, a mother of two, died when her car rolled over and crashed in March. The front of the vehicle was smashed. The bumper was torn off. The 25-year-old woman was thrown from the vehicle. 12 News obtained the video through a records request. The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office obscured Hughes' body in the video while paramedics tried to save her life. Her grandmother fondly remembered Hughes in a March 2024 interview. “She just brought sunshine, sunshine. Every time you see her, she has a smile on her face. She was just a hard-working mother,” said Earline Coleman, Hughes' grandmother. Body camera video shows a witness describing what happened to officers. “They were driving so fast,” the unidentified witness said. “I was on the far left; someone was trying to change lanes and they just collided.” At least three people called 911 to help the young mother. One caller said, “I just saw him hit a guardrail and roll over. It broke into pieces, I don't know.” Another caller said, “One car changing lanes hit another car. The one car rolled over and hit the guardrail. It's upside down and I just noticed someone was thrown out of the car. They're on the ground. Civilians are trying to resuscitate them.” Hughes' family was grateful someone was there. “I want to thank these people for rushing to help my granddaughter. People who didn't even know her tried to save her life,” Coleman said.
