OCFA fire truck rolls over in accident on Irvine Freeway; at least 8 firefighters injured

An Orange County Fire Authority fire truck overturned on a highway in Irvine on Thursday evening, injuring several people. Helicopters had to land on the highway to transport patients away from the accident scene.

The call came in just before 7 p.m. Thursday on State Route 241 near the Tomato Springs toll plaza. The accident occurred not far from the airport fire, which has burned more than 23,000 acres of land between Orange and Riverside counties.

Images from SkyFOX showed what appeared to be an overturned OCFA truck blocking several lanes. According to the California Highway Patrol, it was an ambulance.

CHP reported that several helicopters had to land on the highway to transport patients to the hospital.

The CHP issued a SigAlert for the northbound lanes of 241 for at least five hours.

The number of injured and their condition remain unclear.
