VIDEO: Canna Coffee owner criticized for verbally abusing delivery driver accused of another racist incident

The owner of a Washington, DC, cafe who was filmed racially abusing a delivery driver for not speaking English has been accused of using derogatory language in a separate incident in March.

According to the alleged victim, he and his wife went to Canna Coffee on Florida Avenue Northwest to sell the shop owner a stove. When they arrived, the man stated that there was a disagreement over the price. He says that the owner then began to verbally abuse him and his wife, calling them homophobic and racist slurs.

A video provided to FOX 5 by the victim shows the argument from multiple angles. A video from inside the store appears to show men attempting to push the oven out of the store while yelling at the clerk.

“You're holding me against my will,” the seller is heard saying. “Please, I'm afraid for my life.”

Another video obtained by FOX 5 shows the clerk attempting to leave the store and repeatedly stating that he feels like he is being held against his will.

In the final video, the shop owner is seen outside the store holding a dog while talking to someone on the phone. He is heard saying that after giving the man money for the oven, he found that the appliance was not in the condition he expected and that he wanted his money back.

It is not clear if the seller returned the money, but both he and the shop owner wait outside for the police. While waiting, the owner can be heard cursing at the couple and continuing to swear until the police arrive.

The man told FOX 5 that he later hired an attorney to get payment for the oven, which is how he obtained video from inside the business. FOX 5 has reached out to DC Police to confirm details of the incident and provide the police report.

Canna Coffee came under fire on Tuesday after a viral video posted on TikTok showed the shop owner yelling and cursing at Uber Eats delivery driver Gregorio Amundarain, a Latino driver, for only speaking Spanish.

Amundarain, who moved to the U.S. from Venezuela to support his family, told FOX 5 he had never experienced such hostility while picking up an order.

“I am sad,” he said, noting that he had hoped for a better life in America.

The video has now been viewed millions of times and the store has received heavy criticism from viewers, companies and even the Washington DC government

Uber said it had removed Canna Coffee from its platform, stating: “We are absolutely disgusted by this behavior. Uber is proud to help people from many different backgrounds find work in their communities, and hate has no place on our platform.”

And on Thursday, DoorDash told FOX 5 that it had also removed the restaurant from its app.

“DoorDash does not tolerate discrimination of any kind and Canna Coffee has been removed from the DoorDash platform. We expect all members of our community to treat others with dignity and respect and do not want to send anyone into an environment that could pose a threat to their safety and well-being,” the company said in a statement.

GrubHub also responded to FOX 5's request for comment, saying, “We are aware of the incident involving another delivery service at Canna Coffee. Delivery partners should always be treated with respect, and we are conducting a full investigation and working to follow up with this merchant before taking further action.”

Washington DC police confirmed they are investigating the incident as a possible hate crime, but no arrests have been made. They say the investigation is ongoing.
