Brothers of illegal immigrants arrested in Missouri in connection with fatal car thefts

Two brothers were arrested in connection with a series of car thefts in Missouri, one of which ended fatally, authorities said.

The Jasper County Sheriff's Office released a statement Thursday announcing the arrest of Adin Aman Cantarero Benitez, 26, and Jose Cantarero Benitez, 20.

According to the Jasper County Sheriff's Office, both are illegal immigrants from Honduras.

On Monday evening around 5:25 p.m., Jasper County detectives received a report of a possible dead man in a ditch on I-44. The victim was identified as Jesse Gilmore, 63, of Oklahoma.

Authorities say Gilmore was shot in the head around 3:30 a.m. Monday morning, allegedly after a brief conversation with Adin Aman Cantarero Benitez. Adin then got into Gilmore's car, a red Chevy Cobalt, and met with Jose Cantarero Benitez before driving east, where Gilmore was pulled from the vehicle and thrown into a ditch.

The brothers then drove to Independence, Missouri, one driving the victim's car and the other driving a blue Toyota Tundra pickup truck.

Adin was arrested for DUI that same evening around 10:00 p.m. At the time, law enforcement was unaware of his connection to the Jasper County incident.

The following day, shortly after 5:00 p.m., Independence police became aware of the second suspect, Jose Cantarero Benitez, who allegedly attempted to steal another car and shot a woman in the chest.

Jose was arrested after a foot chase and the victim is reportedly in critical condition.

Adin is charged with premeditated murder, armed criminal action and premeditated robbery, while Jose Benitez is still awaiting arraignment.

Gilmore's autopsy is scheduled for Friday, September 20.
