India controls the first Test after Bumrah takes 4-50 to bowl out Bangladesh for 149

CHENNAI, India (AP) — Jasprit Bumrah scored 4-50 to help Bangladesh to 149 runs and give India a 227-run first-innings lead on the second day of the first Test on Friday.

On a day that saw 17 wickets fall, India were dismissed for 376 early in the morning session, with Ravichandran Ashwin scoring 113 and later reaching 81-3 at stumps – giving an overall lead of 308 – after opting not to enforce the follow-on. Shubman Gill was unbeaten on 33 and Rishabh Pant was not out on 12.

In between all this, Bumrah ran through Bangladesh's lower middle order and capped a superb Indian bowling performance that dismissed the visitors early in the third session, with pacers Mohammed Siraj (2-30) and Akash Deep (2-19) contributing with economical figures.

Shakib al Hasan's 32 was the highest score for Bangladesh, who slumped to 26-3 at lunchtime and could not stop the fall of wickets, losing two more soon after play resumed.

Siraj had captain Najmul Hossain Shanto caught in slip for 20 before Bumrah removed Mushfiqur Rahim in similar fashion for 8, leaving Bangladesh at 40-5 after 12.5 overs.

Shakib and Litton Das fought back with a 51-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Das scored 22 runs from 42 balls, including three fours.

Spin then proved to be the bombshell for India as Ravindra Jadeja (2-19) removed Das, caught at square leg by substitute fielder Dhruv Jurel. Jadeja picked up a second ball when Shakib was caught at short leg two overs later.

At 92-7, Bangladesh were facing elimination but Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored 27 runs off 52 balls to save the team from complete disgrace. He manoeuvred the lower orders to score another 57 runs for the last three wickets while preventing Bumrah from taking five wickets.

India's star-studded top order faltered again in the second innings.

Rohit Sharma was caught at slip for 5 as he failed to fend off an extra bounce from Taskin Ahmed (1-17). Yashasvi Jaiswal chased a long throw from Nahid Rana and was caught at 10, while Virat Kohli scored 17 runs – and added 39 for the third wicket with Gill – before falling lbw to Mehidy Hasan (1-16).

Replays suggested an inside edge and Kohli did not ask for a DRS review even though India had the full quota of three reviews.

Gill and Pant finished the day without further damage.

Earlier, Bangladeshi pace bowler Hasan Mahmud took his second consecutive five-wicket haul in India's first innings, helping Ashwin to his sixth Test hundred and a personal best on his home ground. After missing a pull to mid-off, Ashwin was given a rousing reception by his home crowd.

India returned to the match at 339-6 from the previous day, but lost Jadeja early on, who scored 86 runs from 124 balls, ending the 199-run partnership with Ashwin on the seventh wicket that had turned India around from a precarious 144-6 on the first day.

Mahmud finished with figures of 5-83, becoming the first Bangladeshi bowler to take five wickets in India. It was also his second five-wicket haul in as many innings, after taking 5-43 against Pakistan in Rawalpindi. Taskin Ahmed's figures were 3-55.

The second of two Tests will be played in Kanpur and will begin on September 27, followed by three Twenty20 matches.
