In a social media post, the superintendent of Frankfort-Schuyler Central School addresses the use of firearms on school grounds last week.

Frankfort Police are investigating the September 3 incident at the school and announced the arrest of the person responsible.

According to FPD, on September 3, “Frankfort Elementary School's School Resource Officer (SRO) was notified of an incident involving the discharge of a firearm that occurred on school property outside of the school building. The suspect was identified as Benedict Rotundo Jr.”

Rotundo is a licensed and active police officer employed by the Village of Yorkville Police Department.

“Due to his status as a licensed and active law enforcement officer,” FPD stated in a press release, “Rotundo was authorized to carry a concealed weapon on school property at the time of the incident. The investigation also determined that the discharge of the firearm and resulting injuries were not the direct result of an intentional act of violence toward any of the victims.”

A gun accidentally went off during an open day at a primary school in Frankfort

Families waiting in line Tuesday night to attend a back-to-school open house at Frankfort-Schuyler Elementary School were in for quite a scare.

However, it turned out that the firearm in Rotundo's possession was not registered on his New York State Pistol Permit or on a New York State C-Form.

On September 17, Rotundo was arrested and charged with failure to report/register purchase of a firearm, a misdemeanor.

“Police would like to remind the public that Rotundo is presumed innocent until proven guilty,” the press release said.

Oneida County Court Judge Michael Dwyer, who oversees the issuing of firearm permits, revoked Rotundo's gun permit the day after the incident and ordered the OC Sheriff's Office to retrieve the five guns listed on his permit.

According to Dwyer, Rotundo told officials that four of the five copies were lost or stolen.

Rotundo had 30 days to request a hearing, but if he did not do so by October 4, his license could be revoked.
