Moore murder trial adjourned – Portsmouth Daily Times

PORTSMOUTH – The murder trial of a South Webster man accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend's father has been postponed.

The murder trial of John Moore was scheduled to begin Monday, Sept. 23, but was postponed at the request of prosecutors. The jury trial is now scheduled to begin Dec. 16 and last two days, according to court documents filed with the Scioto County Clerk of Court.

The request for a postponement was filed by the Scioto County District Attorney, who cited a scheduling conflict with witnesses key to the case.

“Counsel points out that the lead investigator and the necessary witness in the case are out of town and therefore unavailable for the trial. Counsel for the State submits that the trial cannot proceed without the said witness,” the motion for adjournment states.

Moore's full list of charges includes: one count of aggravated murder, two counts of murder, one count of aggravated assault and one count of possession of a weapon while under disability. The aggravated murder and murder charges also come with weapon specifications.

The charges stem from an incident at Moore's home in Lick Run Lyra. According to a Scioto County Sheriff's press release at the time, a woman called the sheriff's office and requested a deputy be on standby while she retrieved items from the home at 14191 Lick Run Lyra Road, South Webster.

“The caller stated that she wanted the deputy on standby because she and her ex-boyfriend had been involved in a disturbance the previous evening in Jackson County, Ohio. At 1:59 p.m., dispatch received another call from the woman reporting that her ex-boyfriend had just shot her father,” the press release states.

At that point, Morris was taken by paramedics to Southern Ohio Medical Center and Moore was charged with attempted murder. Morris was later taken to Grant Medical Center in Columbus, where he died. The charges against Morris were subsequently upgraded.

Moore is represented by local attorney Richard Nash. The case will be heard in the courtroom of Scioto County Common Pleas Judge Mark Kuhn.
