“Our hearts break for the family”

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (Gray News) – A deputy sheriff was killed in an off-duty traffic accident in Florida Thursday morning.

The deputy was identified as 40-year-old Darell Brown, who worked for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

According to HCSO, Brown was involved in an off-duty accident when his personal vehicle collided with a semi-trailer truck on U.S. Highway 301 in Thonotosassa.

According to HCSO, Brown was on his way home from work when the accident occurred.

According to a press release, Brown joined the HCSO in January 2015 and “faithfully served his community as an auxiliary jail employee in both detention facilities.” He most recently worked in the booking unit at the Orient Road Jail.

In a statement, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said his department was heartbroken:

“Our hearts break for Deputy Brown's family, friends and loved ones as they deal with this incredible loss… Deputy Brown was more than just a colleague; he was a friend, a mentor and a source of inspiration to many. His genuine warmth, dedication and compassionate spirit left a lasting impression on all who were fortunate enough to know him.”

Chronister said Brown is married and has a blended family of five children, ages 5 to 20.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
