Man receives medical treatment (pending arrest) after shooting near Charlotte-Sarasota County border

A suspect receives medical treatment and awaits arrest following a shooting incident near the Charlotte-Sarasota county line.

On the morning of September 18, 2024, the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office responded to a call reporting shots fired and dispatched to the area of ​​1540 Chancellor Boulevard near the Charlotte County-Sarasota County line. When officers arrived, they quickly determined that the disturbance involved two people and that gunfire was exchanged.

The victim was found at the scene with injuries sustained in the shooting. The suspect fled the scene on foot. With the assistance of the North Port Police Department, a search for the suspect was immediately launched. The suspect, identified as Anthony Gooden (12/2/1967), was quickly located and also found with injuries sustained in the shooting. Both individuals were transported to hospitals for medical attention.

Through investigation, investigators concluded that this was an isolated incident between the two individuals and that there was no danger to the public. An arrest warrant was issued against Gooden on the following charges:

  • Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, second degree felony (x2)
  • Discharge of a firearm in public, first degree misdemeanor
  • Grand theft of a weapon, third degree felony
  • Shooting at/into or into a dwelling/building, second degree felony
