What is “Galaxy Gas” and is the new TikTok trend dangerous?

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Galaxy Gas has been making waves on social media selling flavored nitrous oxide and cream chargers.

On TikTok, people have been sharing videos of themselves “sniffing” Galaxy Gas to get high as part of a new trend. The cans are available online or in major brand stores.

However, doctors warn that misusing products like Galaxy Gas can cause side effects.

A cream dispenser is a stainless steel cartridge filled with nitrous oxide (N2O).

“Nitrous oxide is a gas that gives cream and other ingredients a foamy, whipped consistency when poured. Compared to traditional hand whipping, cream chargers can increase the volume of whipped cream by four times. … An average cream charger contains 8 grams of N2O under pressure and is not refillable,” the company's website states.

When you visit the company's website, you will be required to agree to a disclosure statement before scrolling.

“By purchasing products containing nitrous oxide, you expressly agree and warrant that your possession and use is in accordance with the law and is strictly limited to the preparation of food as provided by law and for no other purpose,” the statement on the website reads.

Dr. Puja Vithalani, a primary care physician at Kaiser Permanente, told Yahoo News that Galaxy Gas abuse comes with many side effects.

“There is a reason why it is an anesthetic. We use it in dental procedures and medical procedures. It used to be used even in childbirth. It has to be monitored. After that, oxygen has to be given… it is very dangerous to use it outside of those limits,” he said.

Now TikTok issues a warning that some substances can be dangerous if you search for “Galaxy Gas” in the app.

“Some substances can be dangerous if used or abused. Learn more about how drugs, alcohol and tobacco can affect your mind, body and behavior,” the social media site's warning reads.
