Kevin Smith just celebrated Mallrats turning 30 next year, and I've never felt older

For many of us, some movies represent key moments or periods in our lives. Maybe you saw a movie on a night when something significant happened in your life. Maybe there was a movie or series of movies you saw with friends that always make you think. For me, Kevin Smith's early movies will always make me think of college, and man, I just realized that college was a long time ago, because Mallrats is damn old.

Kevin Smith recently had a mini-Mallrats Reunion at a fan convention where he appeared with his heterosexual partner Jason Mewes alongside Brodie Bruce himself, Jason Lee. In the post on Instagram, Smith mentions that Mallrats I'm about to turn 30, which is crazy and can't possibly be true because I can't possibly be that old.

And yet it is true. Mallrats was released in 1995, meaning 2025 will mark its 30th anniversary. It came out a year after Smith's directorial debut with the indie darling Employee. Mallrats was a great opportunity for Smith to work with a major studio, one that he absolutely missed because Mallrats flopped terribly in the cinemas.

However, the film later became a cult classic when it was discovered on VHS by people like me and my dorm friends during my freshman year of college. That year I saw both Employee And MallratsWe have rented these films several times throughout this year and thereafter.

It is no exaggeration to say that these films and On the hunt for Amythat soon followed are the reason why I became obsessed with film and now write about films for a living. A friend of mine even wrote a screenplay about it, which to our freshman year of college, clearly inspired by Smith. It was awful, but we laughed about it.

But somehow it's been almost three decades since I was in college. That doesn't seem quite right, I can't possibly be that old. Except, yes, no, I am actually that old. I'm old enough that two years ago I saw Kevin Smith on his tour for Employees III. I watched it with one of my college friends at the time, and we were both reminiscing about an era that was much further back than it seemed at the time.

One thing Smith does not mention in the post is whether we will ever have a Mallrats 2. The director has spoken more than once about wanting to make the film, and there is a Mallrats 2 script exists in his opinion. At one point it looked like Mallrats 2 happened, and then Smith suffered this mild, possibly fatal heart attack. He finally shifted into high gear and made Employees IIIinstead a film inspired by heart attack.

It is unclear what the current status of the Mallrats 2provisionally known as Mallrats Dusk it actually is. The film could still be shot, but nobody can say when exactly.
