Hunting Commission invites local hunters to help fight hunger | News

The Pennsylvania Game Commission is urging deer hunters across the state to make a difference this hunting season by giving back to their communities. Through a partnership with Hunters Sharing the Harvest, hunters can donate their harvested deer to support families in need.

Hunters Sharing the Harvest partners with over 5,000 food assistance centers in all 67 Pennsylvania counties. When a hunter donates a deer, these processors turn it into venison that is distributed to food banks, food pantries and community centers. This initiative aims to combat hunger, especially in rural and underserved areas where access to fresh protein can be limited.

Since its founding in 1991, Hunters Sharing the Harvest has delivered more than 2.5 million pounds of venison. With nearly two million Pennsylvania residents struggling with food insecurity, a single deer can have a significant impact—200 servings of venison.

The program not only fights hunger but also promotes responsible wildlife management. By encouraging hunters to donate surplus game, the game population remains balanced, reducing the risk of overpopulation and its negative impact on ecosystems and local agriculture.

After a successful hunt, hunters can bring their game to a participating processor, fill out a donation form and have the meat processed free of charge. Cash donations are also welcome and help cover processing fees.

The participating Erie County food bank is Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania, 1507 Grimm Drive, Erie, PA 16503. For other participating organizations, visit www.sharedeer.org/food-banks/.
