The Great Basin Complex Incident Management Team 4 took command of the Wapiti and Frog fires on Thursday evening

GRANDJEAN, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Highway 21 is now open to public traffic. Drivers are asked to use caution between Lowman and Stanley. Firefighters are working along the highway. Speed limits are reduced to 45 mph and headlights should be on while driving. Smoke and occasional flames may be seen in areas where the fire is smoldering. Debris and rocks may also be present along the roadway. Pilot vehicles may be used, especially in areas where the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is working to replace guardrails. One area is still closed, affecting several roads leading off Highway 21; access to Boundary Creek is open.

The Wapiti Fire has only increased in size minimally over the past seven days as the region has received significant rainfall. To the north, the fire is not under control near Copper Mountain but has not spread since the start of the week as it has received rain and snow. On the southern edge, the fire is burning in extremely steep and inaccessible terrain where natural features such as rock walls limit its spread.

Firefighters worked to remove hoses and other equipment from the Frog Fire that had been placed near properties for fire suppression as the likelihood of the fire spreading further to homes has decreased. The main location of the Frog Fire is near Yankee Fork.

The evacuation status for Stanley Zone 1 is currently READY. Stanley Zones 2 – 5 and Casino are no longer under evacuation status. There are currently no evacuations related to the Frog Fire.
