Chipmaker Qualcomm has announced it will lay off 226 employees in San Diego over the course of the year. A California WARN notice first released this week said the layoffs would take effect on November 12.

Although the company has not yet confirmed which teams will be affected, layoffs will occur at 16 facilities in San Diego, where its headquarters are located.

“Our leading technology and product portfolio has enabled us to execute on our diversification strategy. As part of normal business operations, we prioritize and coordinate our investments, resources and talent to ensure we are best positioned to take advantage of the unprecedented diversification opportunities available to us,” said Kristin Stiles, a company spokeswoman.

Last year, Qualcomm laid off 1,250 employees.

In its latest quarterly results, the company reported strong earnings due to increased phone chip sales.
