“This was not a bad child. This was not a child who was angry. This was not a child who had hatred in his heart for his mother or stepfather, on the contrary. This was a child who had significant mental health problems,” Todd said of WAPT“Her family had the same mental health issues that we know are hereditary. This child was taking the medications she was given, but those medications were making her symptoms worse without anyone being able to recognize it beforehand.”

“And while she was in a psychotic state, she lost herself in an episode of acute stress on March 19 in what was the perfect storm,” she argued.

However, the public prosecutor insisted that she was “not insane at the time of the incident.”

“There is no doubt that Carly Madison Gregg is the one who killed her mother, Ashley Smylie. There is no doubt that she was trying to kill Heath Smylie when she pointed the gun directly at his head and hit him in the shoulder,” said attorney Michael Smith. “And there is no doubt that she was the one who hid the camera and thus tampered with evidence. We ask you to go back there and find her guilty on all three counts because she was not insane at the time it happened. She knew exactly what she was doing and she knew the difference between right and wrong.”

According to Assistant District Attorney Kathryn NewmanOne of the teenager's friends was “so concerned about Carly's marijuana use” and the girl's use of disposable cell phones “that he felt compelled to tell Miss Ashley Smylie that day.” Smylie was a teacher at Northwest Rankin High School, where her daughter became a student.

According to prosecutors, Smylie began searching her daughter's room when they returned home from school that day and found vape pens. According to Newman, the teen then went into her parents' bedroom and pulled out a Magnum handgun from under the mattress.

What sounds like a gunshot is then heard, followed by a scream and two more gunshots. Gregg is then seen walking into the kitchen, where she immediately begins using a phone while simultaneously singing to the family dogs.

According to prosecutors, the teen's stepfather began receiving messages from Ashley's phone asking, “When are you coming home, honey?” – and claims Gregg was the one sending those messages. The teen is also accused of asking several friends for help. One of them responded to her requests and was allegedly asked if she had “ever seen a dead body before” and if the friend was “squeamish around dead bodies.”

According to prosecutors, Gregg then showed the witness the victim's body – claiming her stepfather was next – and said, “I put three in my mom and three more are waiting for my stepfather when he gets home.” The girlfriend was allegedly told to wait in the backyard before she heard gunshots and saw Gregg running.

When Heath Smylie took the stand on Tuesday, he testified that when he opened the kitchen door of the house, “the gun fired into my face before the door was even three or four inches open, and from there it all happened pretty quickly.”

“The gun flashed in my face. It went off twice more, but after the first shot my hand was already on the gun and I snatched it away from Carly,” he claimed.

Video from another camera shows him coming home before screaming is heard from inside the house, including him shouting “Carly!” Gregg is then seen running out of the house, with Heath hot on his heels. “It looked like she was terrified…she was screaming like crazy, scared, like she had seen a demon or something,” he testified.

When Deputy Tony Shack took the stand on Thursday, he also showed the court bodycam footage showing him driving Gregg back to the crime scene after they were found on the side of the road.

When she is taken out of the vehicle to check her hands for gunpowder residue, she says she cannot remember which hand she fired with when she is swabbed. She asks one of the officers, “Is my stepfather OK?”

One of the police officers then asked her, “Are you okay?” – before she replied, “Yes, I’m fine.”
