MSP says driver distraction was a factor in four-vehicle crash in Calumet

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) – Driver inattention was a factor in a four-car crash that occurred Thursday evening, according to the Michigan State Police (MSP) Calumet Post.

Shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday, MSP Calumet Post Officers responded to a report of a four-vehicle crash with injuries on US-41 near Boston Location Road in Franklin Twp.

While MSP was on scene, an investigation revealed that a vehicle had stopped in the northbound lane waiting to make a left turn onto Boston Location Rd. A second vehicle had stopped behind the first.

A third vehicle traveling northbound failed to see the first two vehicles stopped in the roadway. This vehicle struck the second vehicle, causing a chain reaction in which the second vehicle struck the first vehicle and entered the southbound lane of oncoming traffic.

A fourth vehicle traveling southbound was unable to avoid a collision with the second vehicle, as the first impact caused the second vehicle to end up in the southbound lane, resulting in a collision.

One of the drivers was transported to UP Health System Portage for treatment by Mercy EMS. All other drivers and passengers were treated and released at the scene by Mercy EMS.

Michigan State Police were assisted by the Houghton County Sheriff's Department, Hancock City Police Department, Mercy EMS and Dave's BP Towing. Police said driver distraction was a factor in the crash.
