Former Chattanooga police officer loses license after stun gun incident with deputy sheriff

A former Chattanooga police officer had his license revoked by the Tennessee POST Commission after an internal investigation found he used a stun gun on a Hamilton County sheriff's deputy.

Sgt. Terry Barnes of the CPD's Internal Affairs Division says…

“Officer Batterson took the taser from another officer who was sitting with all three, removed the cartridge, and began to stun that officer with the assistance of the sheriff's department.”

A total of three internal investigations were initiated against Celtain Batterson.

One of them stems from a fatal shooting involving a police officer last year.

Batterson was one of three officials placed on leave following Roger Heard's death.

In another incident, Batterson used a stun gun on a deputy sheriff.

Investigators say the officer was on duty guarding a prisoner at a hospital.

During the meeting, the deputy, according to the officers, wondered what it would be like if they were attacked with a stun gun.

Officials said Batterson then took a stun gun from another officer and used it on him.

“She couldn't believe he had actually done that and from her perspective she laughed about it because she was afraid that the other officers wouldn't support her if she had to physically assault the prisoner she was guarding. When that happened she was really speechless,” says Sergeant Barnes.

The POST Commission voted unanimously to revoke Batterson’s license.

Batterson and the city of Chattanooga also face a civil lawsuit over Heard's death.
