Two defendants charged with drug trafficking from Houston to Laredo; if convicted, both could serve up to 20 years in prison

LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – Two men are now accused of attempting to distribute fentanyl.

According to a criminal complaint filed on August 28, 40-year-old Hernan Cortez traveled from Houston to Laredo with half a kilogram of fentanyl.

Investigators say Cortez planned to sell the drugs in Laredo with the help of 37-year-old Daniel Elizondo.

Cortez had met with Elizondo in an alleged drug stash.

Elizondo left the hideout with a black bag in his hand and then walked into an alley that connected to another property.

Elizondo was later seen leaving the alley without the bag.

Authorities later found over 500 grams of fentanyl hidden in a tire in the alley where Elizondo had been.

If convicted, Cortez and Elizondo face up to 20 years in prison and a maximum fine of $10 million.
