Although a large amount of evidence is still pending, the attorney has scheduled a trial date for a 28-year-old murder defendant on September 20 in Baltimore District Court.

Maurice Jones is charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm in a serious crime of violence, carrying a handgun in a vehicle and on person, carrying a loaded handgun in a vehicle and on person, and two counts of possession of a weapon with a conviction for the alleged murder of Montez Barrett on April 24.

The prosecutor acknowledged that numerous pieces of evidence are still being examined, including DNA, firearms and fingerprints. She said she is also waiting for medical records from Sheppard Pratt, where the defendant was at the time of his arrest.

Jones' attorney, Brandon Thornton, rejected the prosecution's offer to give him a life sentence, with probation suspended for 60 years for first-degree murder and 20 years (the first five years without the possibility of parole) for using a firearm in a serious crime of violence on behalf of his client.

Judge Melissa M. Phinn has scheduled the start of Jones' five-day trial for February 12, 2025.

According to a Baltimore Police press release, Barrett, 23, was killed in the 1200 block of McCulloh Street.
