Emma Raducanu overcomes injury scare and reaches the quarterfinals of the Korea Open | Tennis

Emma Raducanu reached the quarterfinals of the Korea Open after defeating China's Yuan Yue in straight sets. The 21-year-old needed seven match points to secure a hard-fought 6-4, 6-3 victory over the eighth seed.

Raducanu took the lead and won a close first set. She quickly took the lead at the start of the second set, then fended off a comeback from Yuan and served eight aces in the second set.

Raducanu had beaten American Peyton Stearns in the previous round to earn a clash with Yuan, which was incredibly close in the early stages. The momentum shifted when Raducanu levelled at 4-4 with some solid forehands and broke Yuan's serve in the following game to take the lead.

After a medical timeout, the Briton served out the set successfully and quickly picked up where she left off to take control in the second set. She broke Yuan's serve in the opening game before extending her lead in the second set, which included two aces.

She won her sixth game in a row and took a 3-0 lead, but suffered a break in the fourth game when Yuan reduced her lead by one point and the Chinese player tried to increase the pressure.

Although it looked like Yuan was slowly finding her rhythm, Raducanu fought back, held serve and extended her lead in a tight sixth game. The eighth game brought seven deuces and Raducanu wasted five match points before Yuan finally broke, but the Briton stymied any chance of a late comeback by taking the win in the following game.

Raducanu said: “I think my key to success today was that I tried to let go of any frustration. At the end of the match I had a lot of match points that I couldn't convert, so I just stayed focused and managed to break in the last game.”

This article was corrected on 19 September 2024 to reflect the fact that the penultimate game was played on Emma Raducanu's serve, not Yuan Yue's.
