Driver dies in hospital, passenger in serious condition after accident in Casco Township

According to the Allegan County Sheriff's Office, a driver has died and his passenger remains in serious condition following a crash in Casco Township.

The accident occurred on I-196 northbound near the 25-mile marker at approximately 5:35 p.m.

According to the investigation, the driver lost control of his car, drove into a ditch on the east side of the highway and rolled over several times, officials said.

No other cars were hit in the accident.

Both people were taken to the hospital for treatment, but the driver later died from his injuries, according to the sheriff's office.

As of Friday, the passenger's condition remained stable but serious.

Speed ​​and alcohol did not appear to have played a role in the accident, but not wearing a seatbelt did, officials said.

I-196 northbound was temporarily closed during the accident investigation, but has since reopened to traffic.

The names of the two people involved are being withheld pending notification of the family.
