RG Kar incident: CBI questions close associate of arrested ex-director Sandip Ghosh

Kolkata: CBI investigators on Saturday started questioning another doctor, allegedly close to arrested former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, in connection with their investigation into the rape and murder of a woman doctor at the medical facility, an agency official said. Birupaksha Biswas, who was recently shifted by the West Bengal Health Department from Burdwan Medical College and Hospital to the remote Kakdwip hospital in South 24 Parganas district, appeared before Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials at its CGO Complex office in Salt Lake area.

Biswas, allegedly part of a “north Bengal lobby” active in medical colleges, was seen at RG Kar Hospital on August 9 when the doctor's body was found, the CBI official said.

The “North Bengal Lobby” is referred by medical professionals in West Bengal to a group of doctors and officials stationed in government medical institutions who have allegedly threatened students.

“He is being questioned about his presence at RG Kar Hospital on August 9 despite not having any official appointment, apart from other questions,” the official told PTI.

Incidentally, an FIR has been filed against Biswas and two other doctors – Avik De and Ranjit Saha – at Bowbazar police station for allegedly threatening students at various medical colleges and hospitals in West Bengal.

They were charged under Section 351 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (assault as a gesture or preparation to make another believe that he is about to be subjected to criminal violence).
