The saga of Canna Coffee Cookie Ice Cream Cafe Burger Wing Spot just keeps getting weirder

The owner of an Adams Morgan cafe made headlines earlier this week for his racist tirade against a food delivery driver, but the story has since become even more bizarre and disturbing. On Monday, Greg Harris was filmed verbally attacking driver Gregorio Amundarain, who posted the video on TikTok. “Learn English!” Harris repeatedly shouted. “This is not your damn country.”

Washington DC police said he is currently under investigation for hate crimes and assault in connection with the incident and that Doordash and Uber Eats have dropped his restaurant, Canna Coffee Cookie Ice Cream Cafe Burger Wing Spot, saying the companies are “absolutely disgusted” by his behavior, Fox5 DC reports.

The business was originally a cannabis dispensary called Mary Jays Exotic, which was accused by the DC Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration of illegally manufacturing, growing and selling marijuana, Fox5 DC reports. It has since been transformed into Canna, a restaurant with an unusual online presence. Many of the food and interior shots that Harris uploaded appear to be altered or computer-generated – one shows a pole dancer made from syrup drizzled over a stack of pancakes.

Even stranger, food blogger @eat_dc pointed out that some dishes on Canna's Uber Eats menu – which has now been removed – appear to have been taken directly from the menu of Tatt— dishes as special as a honey halva latte and a plate of spinach, Jerusalem artichokes and eggs. Even some of the menu photos seemed to come from Tatte's website.

On Google Maps, CANNA is listed as open 24 hours, and its owners have somewhat dubiously listed it as Black-owned, Veteran-owned, Women-owned, Latino-owned, Asian-owned, LGBTQ+-owned, Disabled-owned, And Indigenous owned, the store is decorated with a giant inflatable coffee mug and signs that read “People are crazy.”

DC's Division of Licensing and Consumer Protection switch off the restaurant on Thursday, said the WashingtonPost that the company has been under investigation for months for unspecified violations. The health department ordered the closure on September 11.

But on Thursday afternoon, two men told in front of the restaurant Washingtonian They are friends with the company and the company remains open to friends and family. One man who said his name was Chosen but declined to give his last name said he would only be interviewed if he was paid through CashApp. (Harris urged WUSA9 to either send a black reporter or pay him for an exclusive interview.)

The other man directed us to his YouTube channel, TheUrbanLandlord, whose homepage featured a quote from Ayn Rand's Atlas Throws the World Away. The most recent videos were about immigration, with titles like “Eye-Opening Interview with Springfield Resident Reveals Truth About Haitian Refugee Crisis.” The man said the U.S. government was too focused on making it easier for immigrants to find housing in the U.S. “That's what he's concerned with,” he said of Harris.

Around the corner on 18th Street, a group of Venezuelan delivery drivers sat on their motorcycles, waiting for orders to come in on their phones. Several said they knew Amundarain, also from Caracas, and had seen his TikToks.

One woman, Alejandra Martinez, said she was called a “bitch” and verbally abused by a Taco Bell employee, but said such interactions are rare.

“He behaved really well, stayed calm and just recorded everything,” another driver, Tony, said of Amundarain. “If it had been me…” he acted as if he was going to drive off and hit someone.

Washingtonian could not reach Amundarain, but on a In a TikTok Live video on Thursday night, Amundarain told the audience in Spanish that he had had a “hard, hard day” on Monday. “We immigrants here in the United States, we'“They are crucial and fundamental here,” he said.

Harris himself has been active on Instagram since the incident and has changed his bio to “the guy who went viral for telling the truth in a #mean way.”

Harris posted a photo of a WTOP reporter who came to interview him and also posted several videos of interactions with customers and a person who appeared to be protesting outside the restaurant.

“I'm famous!” he jokes in a video as he talks to friends in a car outside the restaurant. “But they don't even know the whole story.”

“The successful #BlackBusinessOwner who founded @cannacoffeeicecreamplantburger doesn't let hate stop him from working!” reads another caption. “DM NOW FOR NEW EXCLUSIVE MERCHANDISE!”
