Michael Madsen files for divorce and restraining order after arrest

Following his recent legal troubles, Michael Madsen and his wife of 28 years, DeAnna Madsen, are calling off their relationship.

Madsen, who was arrested last month on domestic violence charges, filed for divorce in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Wednesday, according to court documents obtained by USA TODAY.

The 66-year-old actor cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for his split from DeAnna. The former couple have been separated since the death of their son Hudson in January 2022, who committed suicide at the age of 26.

In a statement attached to his divorce filing, Madsen claims his estranged wife has repeatedly abused him and accused her of contributing to their son's death. He also claims his August arrest was due to a trespassing incident by DeAnna.

“Michael looks forward to spending quality time with his children and pursuing acting and poetry … now that he is free from a toxic, abusive marriage,” Madsen's attorney Perry C. Wander said in a statement to USA TODAY.

At the time of publication, USA TODAY was unable to reach a representative for DeAnna.

As part of his divorce petition, Madsen is asking the court to deny DeAnna spousal support and strip her of the actor's pension. The division of the couple's joint assets will be decided at a later date.

Madsen has also filed for a temporary restraining order against DeAnna to ensure “his safety and well-being” during the separation.

Madsen's relationship with DeAnna was his third marriage. He was previously married to Georganne LaPiere and Jeannine Bisignano. Madsen and DeAnna have sons together, Calvin, Luke and the late Hudson. He also has children Christian and Max with Bisignano.

In his restraining order against DeAnna, Madsen alleges that his estranged wife has been physically and verbally abusive to him on multiple occasions, including an Aug. 17 burglary that led to his arrest for domestic violence.

The filing states that DeAnna entered Madsen's home and “violated his privacy by entering his bedroom.” Authorities from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department were reportedly called for assistance.

Madsen was arrested following the incident and subsequently booked into the LASD Malibu/Lost Hills station, where he was charged with domestic violence, a misdemeanor. He was released after posting $20,000 bail.

The “Kill Bill” star claims the charges were later dropped. USA TODAY has reached out to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for comment.

“I am the victim of an abusive, codependent and toxic relationship that ended with (DeAnna) breaking into my home and having me wrongfully arrested for (domestic violence),” Madsen said in a statement accompanying his divorce filing. “When the bars of the cell close behind you, it is the final curtain on any marriage or relationship, and mine was no exception.”

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter on August 22, DeAnna said, “Michael is struggling with his own personal issues. I and our children are supporting him to the best of our ability. We ask for privacy at this time.”

Madsen included his and DeAnna's 18-year-old son Luke in the restraining order because the actor is “deeply concerned for his own safety and that of his son, particularly in light of the tragic loss of his other son to suicide.”

In his court testimony, Madsen claimed that DeAnna “drove” Hudson to his death through “her neglect, drinking and alcoholism.”

If the restraining order is granted, DeAnna must stop contact with Madsen and her son, stay at least 300 feet from Madsen's home, vehicle and place of work, and participate in a 52-week violent offender intervention program.

A hearing in the Madsen case is scheduled for October 9.
