Syracuse Football

What happened on that crucial 4th and 9th?: Fran Brown suffered his first loss as head coach of the Syracuse football team on Friday night. The Orange lost to Stanford 26-24 on a field goal as time expired. But the most important play of the game came on fourth down and 9 at the Syracuse 45-yard line with 37 seconds left. If the Orange could prevent the Cardinal from getting a first down, the game was over. Cornerback Clarence Lewis was left to cover star wide receiver Elic Ayomanor alone, and Stanford gained 27 yards to set up the game-winning score. Chris Carlson of Syracuse.com explains how it all came about.

Mixed results for McCord: Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord, who began his career with the Oranges with two notable games, finished Friday's game completing 27 of 42 passes for 339 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He was also sacked four times. While there were some great moments, like his leap into the end zone for a thrilling 19-yard touchdown, there were also moments that deserved a slap on the forehead. Brent Axe analyzes McCord's performance and more.

Payment dispute between officials led to at least 1 postponement: Thursday's boys soccer game between Cicero-North Syracuse and Baldwinsville was postponed because referees do not want to be paid through a new online system used by C-NS, among many other schools. “The adults can get mad at each other. But at the end of the day, we're in the kids' business,” C-NS coach Mike McCaffery said. “I don't understand why we're canceling games.”
