The next time you take a Royal Caribbean cruise, you may want to leave these special travel gadgets at home.

Royal Caribbean has quietly added power strips, multiple plugs and surge protectors to its list of “prohibited items.”

The cruise line has decided to ban the use of travel accessories in the cabins of its ships on older ships because they do not have multiple power outlets to charge more than a few devices at once.

If overloaded, power strips and extension cords can cause electrical damage or pose a fire hazard.

However, it is unclear whether Royal Caribbean will enforce this new rule, despite the excitement this change has generated online.

Frequent travelers and large families may find the ban difficult to accept. According to The Street, many older ships do not have multiple power outlets or USB ports in the cabins, but are limited to one American and one European power outlet.

Although many newer cruise ships have more electrical outlets and charging stations available, the ban may be an inconvenience for travelers bringing essential travel devices such as phones, electric shavers, cameras, tablets, e-readers, hairdryers and portable chargers.

The updated list of prohibited items can be found here on the Royal Caribbean website.
