7 unforgettable Laver Cup matches

The Laver Cup 2024 in Berlin is in full swing and celebrating its seventh year.

Here are seven great matches from the Roger Federer-inspired competition.

1) Roger Federer vs Nick Kyrgios, 2017

The first edition of the Laver Cup ended spectacularly: 22-year-old Nick Kyrgios needed a win against Federer to force a doubles decider in extra time after John McEnroe's Team World had recovered from a 3-9 deficit.

Federer claimed a dramatic victory 4-6 7-6(6) 11-9, but not before the Australian earned a match point and pulled away 8-5 on the deciding break point. Federer saved the ball at 8-9 and then served out to claim his third victory of the weekend as Europe narrowly won.

2) Roger Federer vs John Isner, 2018

Chicago knows how to put on a good show, and that was certainly the case when Federer played John Isner in a classic match.

The Swiss legend fended off three match points and the match went into three tiebreaks in a row. Federer had lost an incredibly close doubles match against Isner and Jack Sock when paired with Alexander Zverev, so the pressure was on as Team Europe trailed 8-7 after leading 7-1.

Federer didn't panic despite losing the first shootout after the American hit a scratchy forehand. In the second set, Isner had two match points at 6-4, but the Swiss equalized with an ace and then a backhand, followed by another perfect serve.

Federer won the final tiebreaker 10-7 and Zverev secured victory for Team Europe when he defeated Kevin Anderson

3) Andy Murray vs Alex de Minaur, 2022

The 2022 Laver Cup was always going to be a special occasion, regardless of the outcome, as the tennis world prepared for Federer's farewell. One of the better matches was the one between local hero Andy Murray and Alex de Minaur of Team World.

As befits the game's best golden retrievers, the first set lasted 76 minutes, which the Scot won. Both men were making their debut in the competition and were visibly excited.

The Australian took the second set and then controlled the decisive break to win 10-7. De Minaur thumped his chest three times on the winning point as World put his first point on the board and claimed a historic title.

4) Alexander Zverev vs Milos Raonic, 2019

No one in the history of the Laver Cup has a better win rate than Alexander Zverev, and the German was the hero of the hour at the 2019 event in Geneva when the final match came down to a showdown against Canadian big hitter Milos Raonic.

Zverev won the first set 6-4 with his wild forehand, but lost the second set 3-6. Laver broke and Zverev showed his cojones and won the set 10-4, giving Team Europe its third win in a row.

Now he must follow Federer’s advice and improve his performance when a major tournament is at stake…

5) Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal vs Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock, 2022

The 2022 edition was all about Federer, and who better to have by his side in the final match of his career than his long-time rival Rafael Nadal.

The two teamed up for one last hurrah against Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock. After the first two sets were shared, the tiebreak of the match couldn't have been closer.

Federer hit an ace in front of an enthusiastic crowd to take a 6-5 lead. The chants of “Let's go, Roger” rang out again when Nadal and his partner had match point and the Swiss almost served an ace to end the match.

As Sock hit a forehand down the line to win the match 11-9, Federer insisted that “everything was fine.” Rafa and Roger then sat down as the clock struck midnight in London and tearfully vented their misery.

6) Frances Tiafoe vs Stefanos Tsitsipas, 2022

Team World finally managed to win its first Cup in 2022 and it was an amazing comeback.

Trailing 4-8 at the start of the final day, Team Europe looked to be on course for a fifth title until Felix Auger-Aliassime teamed up with Jack Sock to beat Andy Murray and Matteo Berrettini 10-8. Auger-Aliassime then defeated Novak Djokovic in straight sets.

Stefanos Tsitsipas stormed back for Borg's team and won the first set against Frances Tiafoe.

The American then remained particularly persistent, however, winning the second set tiebreak 13-11 by somehow surviving four match points and then securing the match tiebreak.

Tiafoe dropped his racket at the end of the match and fell on his back as his teammates rained down on him in true penalty shootout style. Captain McEnroe quipped: “It's better than losing.”

7) Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer against Kevin Anderson and Jack Sock, 2018

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic must have been pretty fed up with seeing Kevin Anderson in 2018.

The big South African had already beaten the Swiss in five sets at Wimbledon before losing to Djokovic in the final. Anderson teamed up with world number two doubles player Sock to beat Djokovic and Federer 6-7, 6-3, 10-6 and give Team World its first point in Chicago.

It was the only time the two big beasts played doubles together. Anderson beat the world number one again in singles the next day – although it wasn't enough to stop Björn Borg's men.
