‘Non-citizen’ charged with illegal voting in Iowa city council election

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (Gray Media Iowa State Capitol Bureau) – A Marshalltown man, who the attorney general's office says is not a U.S. citizen, is accused of voting illegally in the city council election. The Iowa Attorney General's Office announced the charges Friday.

A press release from the office said that 42-year-old Jorge Oscar Sanchez-Vasquez lives legally in the United States but is not a U.S. citizen.

According to the Attorney General's Office, Sanchez-Vasquez is accused of two counts of electoral fraud: he illegally registered as a voter and illegally cast his vote on July 16.

A spokeswoman for Attorney General Brenna Bird could not say late Friday afternoon after the charges were announced how many other cases of voter fraud had been reported in Iowa this year.

There are no press releases on the Attorney General's website regarding further cases of alleged election fraud in 2024.

In April, Kim Taylor, the wife of former Republican Iowa Representative Jeremy Taylor, was sentenced to four months in prison, four months of house arrest and two years of probation.

She had previously been found guilty of 52 counts of voter fraud in connection with her husband's primary campaign for Congress in Iowa's 4th District and later his campaign for Woodbury County Executive.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Iowa prosecuted Taylor's case and a grand jury concluded that she had illegally registered others to support her husband's political campaigns.
