Police: Northeastern district suddenly closes schools after threat

Update

The York County Regional Police Department announced in a news release that it had identified a juvenile as a suspect in the threat that led to the closure of schools on Friday.

“As part of our investigation, we were able to identify a suspect from another state. This suspect is currently being investigated by that state's law enforcement agency for possible charges,” the press release said.

The Northeastern School District was closed today “out of an abundance of caution,” it said on its Facebook page.

York County Regional Police received information around 7 a.m. today that there was a threat against the Northeastern School District, according to a press release.

“NESD was immediately notified and for the safety of students and staff, the decision was made to close all schools for the day,” the press release said.

Police say the comment was made last night in a middle school student's Snapchat post. Police and the school district learned of it this morning.

The police are working to identify the author of the comment.

“At this time, information regarding an active threat on school grounds is considered unreliable,” police said in a update.

Northeastern issues statement on threat

The school district issued a press release Friday afternoon saying it was notified by a school security officer at around 6:50 a.m. of “a specific act of violence directed against our school through a social media post.”

The school administration immediately closed the buildings, the press release states. Students and their families were instructed to return home.

“Law enforcement, in conjunction with various investigative agencies, is deploying resources to bring the person responsible to justice,” the press release states. “Once identified, all law enforcement agencies will face significant consequences.”

Northeastern University school buses that were on their way to the buildings turned around, the district's Facebook post said.

Arrangements would be made for students who walked to school or were dropped off by their parents, the post said.

What impact does the threat have on sport

Northeastern has postponed today's field hockey game against New Oxford, the district announced in a separate Facebook post.

There will be no training, open gyms, courses or swimming sessions on Friday and Saturday, the post says. However, away events will take place.

Schools are struggling with reports of threats

In recent weeks, there have been repeated reports of threats in schools in the area.

Last week, police arrested a juvenile in connection with a social media threat targeting middle schools in the West Shore Area School District. The juvenile was charged with terroristic threats and cyber harassment of a child, according to a news release from Lower Allen Township police.

In some districts, such as York City and Southern York, police presence has been increased due to widespread threats on social media.

Commissioner Mike Muldrow posted on Facebook Thursday that additional officers would be coming to the school to assess it because there was a “vague statewide threat.” He added the hashtag: #BetterSafeThanWorried.

In a message last week, Southern said law enforcement had concluded there were “no known credible threats,” but police would be at the school the next day with an increased police presence.

The Dover Area School District posted on its website this week that it, too, has been informed of general social media posts about school safety. Law enforcement authorities do not believe these to be credible, it said.
