Police investigate aggravated assault in Indiana County and attack on campus

UPDATE: Indiana Borough Police continue to investigate a reported stabbing that occurred this morning near the IUP campus.

Police Chief Justin Schall said officers were called to the intersection at 12:25 a.m. this morning for a report of an injured person near Intersection 7.th and Washington Street. Police found a 20-year-old man with an apparent stab wound to his lower back. The preliminary investigation revealed that an altercation occurred in which several men, described only as men in their 20s, were involved in a fight. Witnesses, as well as some of the participants already identified, are being interviewed. Indiana Borough Police are being assisted by IUP Police, State Police and Citizens Ambulance, and the District Attorney's Office.

The incident was one of two that prompted a “shelter in place” notice from IUP officials, which was lifted just before 9:00 a.m. this morning. The other incident was a reported assault at the Suites on Pratt, originally reported at 1:50 a.m. this morning at the Memorial Field House. IUP Police have not released any information about this assault, other than to say it was not a random incident. This incident remains under investigation.

Chief Schawl and IUP officials stressed that there is currently no threat to public safety. Schawl also said they will not accept any further help from the public, but the investigation will continue.

WHAT WE FIRST REPORTED AT 9:00 AM

Within minutes, a curfew for IUP students related to an attack on campus was lifted.

IUP Police have released few details about this case, but we do know it was a physical assault that occurred outside the Suites on Pratt around 1:50 this morning. Originally, the incident was reported to have occurred at the Memorial Field House, but the recent notification sent to the IUP community corrected that. They also said the attack was not random.

Around the same time, IUP police were notified of an aggravated assault incident that occurred in the 200 block of South Seventh Street at 12:15 this morning. Indiana Borough police were called in to assist with that investigation, and a later IUP release said the suspect in the off-campus attack was in custody.

Indiana Borough Police have not released any information about either incident. However, Indiana Borough Police are asking anyone with information about the attack on campus to call them at 724-357-2141.
