West Charlotte Stadium evacuated due to fight in the stands

According to CMS, a group of students were involved in the fight at the football game between West Charlotte and Mallard Creek.

CHARLOTTE, NC — According to a Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools spokesperson, West Charlotte High School's football stadium was evacuated during a Friday night game against Mallard Creek High School due to a fight in the stands.

In a letter to students and families, CMS said the evacuation was a precautionary measure.

The letter confirmed that “a group of students were involved in the fight.” Visitors began to quickly leave the stands, which led to the precautionary evacuation.

The school did not provide any information about what sparked the fight or how many students were involved.

“We are relieved that no injuries were reported and everyone was able to exit the stadium safely,” said the letter, which CMS sent to WCNC Charlotte.

Here is the letter sent to the families in West Charlotte:

Dear West Charlotte families,

This is Principal Cook with an update on tonight's football game between West Charlotte and Mallard Creek. This evening, a group of students were involved in an altercation at the stadium, raising concerns about a possible threat. As a result, some spectators began to quickly exit the stands. Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety of all spectators, the decision was made to evacuate the stadium. Additional police personnel were on site to assist with the situation and we are grateful for their presence. We are relieved that no injuries were reported and everyone was able to exit the stadium safely. The situation is under review, and we will continue to make the safety of our students, staff and community members our highest priority.

We thank everyone present for their cooperation and will keep you updated as needed.
