Murder investigation into death of man stabbed in the street

Police say a murder investigation is underway after a man who was seriously attacked in Bristol died in hospital.

Avon and Somerset Police said the deceased man was stabbed by another man on Stapleton Road in the east of the city at around 5.40pm (CEST) on Friday.

He was treated at Southmead Hospital but died later that evening, police said.

A man was arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting a crime and “attempts to arrest him are continuing,” police said.

Police said extensive searches had been carried out in east Bristol involving uniformed officers and the National Police Air Service to locate the suspect.

During forensic work, Stapleton Road will remain closed between the station and Robertson Road.

Police said they are working to reopen the road as soon as possible.

The official identification of the deceased has not yet been determined and a forensic autopsy will be carried out later, police said.

“Very disturbing”

Superintendent Mark Runacres said police had already reviewed video footage from the scene.

“There is no place for violence on Bristol’s streets and we are committed to working with partners on this issue,” he added.

“We want the community to understand that we are here to help them.

“We understand that such tragic news is deeply disturbing, which is why we will be increasing police presence in the area and conducting more patrols over the coming days. Not because we are aware of any increased risk, but because we want to ensure that you can contact us with any concerns.”

Warning on social media

Superintendent Runacres said some people in the area had been filming and asked anyone with information to contact police.

“Out of respect for the family and friends of the sadly deceased man, we ask that you do not post insensitive images on social media,” he said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police or the charity Crimestoppers on 101.
