West Charlotte High School football stadium evacuated due to fight in the stands

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, the West Charlotte High School football stadium was evacuated Friday night due to a fight in the stands.

A letter to families said the evacuation was done out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety of everyone present.

The letter can be read below:

“Dear West Charlotte families,

This is Principal Cook with an update on tonight's football game between West Charlotte and Mallard Creek. This evening, a group of students were involved in an altercation at the stadium, raising concerns about a possible threat. As a result, some spectators began to quickly exit the stands. Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety of all spectators, the decision was made to evacuate the stadium. Additional police personnel were on site to assist with the situation and we are grateful for their presence. We are relieved that no injuries were reported and everyone was able to exit the stadium safely. The situation is under review, and we will continue to make the safety of our students, staff and community members our highest priority.

We thank everyone present for their cooperation and will keep you updated as needed.

The game between West Charlotte and Mallard Creek was played behind closed doors, with players and coaches waiting until the stands were empty, causing a 45-minute delay.
