Hero Kanu makes his first start for the Buckeyes, replacing Tyleik Williams as defensive tackle

Hero Kanu is in Ohio State’s starting lineup for the first time in his career.

The redshirt sophomore defensive tackle entered the field as a 3-technique defensive tackle in the Buckeyes' first defensive series against Marshall on Saturday, filling in for the injured Tyleik Williams.

Kanu is a third-year player from the village of Geltendorf, Germany. He was used sparingly in 2023, recording 10 tackles and a sack in just 90 snaps. He has played the fourth-most snaps of any defensive tackle and the second-most of those who primarily play 3-techs, with 16 snaps in the Buckeyes' first two games. He will be looking for his first tackle of the season against the Thundering Herd.

Jason Moore and Tywone Malone should be next in line at the 3-tech position, with Caden Curry potentially stepping in for pass rush specialty packages. Will Smith Jr. would be another option off the bench and there's also the possibility that Ty Hamilton or Kayden McDonald could step in at nose guard.
