Man charged in shooting near homeless camp in Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS– A man has been charged in a shooting near homeless encampments in Minneapolis that left one man dead and another injured.

Anthony Jones, 36, has been charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder, the Hennepin County District Attorney's Office said in a press release Friday.

Jones is also being investigated for another murder that occurred Wednesday, the same day as the other shootings, the press release said.

Jones is in jail and did not have an attorney listed Saturday.

Using surveillance video, police were able to identify Jones as the person who shot a man at point-blank range. Further investigation linked him to other “targeted” shootings that occurred in the same area in south Minneapolis, the news release said.

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said the shooting “does not appear to have been aimed at the larger homeless community” but called the attacks “horrific.”

“Everyone has the right to feel safe, whether they have housing or not, and our office will work to ensure that this is the case,” Moriarty said in the press release.
