Cyclist killed in accident in Jeff Davis Parish

JENNINGS, Louisiana – A fatal crash involving a bicyclist is being investigated by Louisiana State Police.

On September 20, 2024, shortly before 4 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D began investigating a two-vehicle crash involving a bicyclist on US 90 near Louisiana Highway 1126. The crash claimed the life of 19-year-old Caleb East of Jennings, according to state police.

The preliminary investigation revealed that East was riding his bicycle westbound on US 90. At the same time, a Ram pickup truck driven by Felton Duhon Jr. of Jennings was behind East on US 90. For reasons still under investigation, the front of the Ram struck the bicycle from behind and East was ejected.

East was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Duhon and his passenger were both properly restrained and did not suffer any injuries.

Standard toxicology samples were taken and sent for analysis. The accident remains under investigation.

Police want to remind motorists of the “3-foot rule” when passing cyclists. Louisiana Revised Law 32:76.1B states that motorists must use caution and maintain at least three feet of distance when passing a bicycle traveling in the same direction. The distance must be maintained until the vehicle has completely passed the cyclist. Ensuring this will help protect cyclists and create safer roads for everyone.
