Carly Gregg sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering her mother

Carly Gregg, the teenager who shot her mother and tried to kill her stepfather, has been sentenced to life in prison, according to several news reports.

The 15-year-old was sentenced on Friday, September 20, after a jury in Rankin County, Mississippi, found her guilty on all counts, including first-degree murder, attempted murder and tampering with evidence, according to The Clarion Ledger, WAPT and WLBT. Gregg was visibly moved when the verdict was read, WAPT reported.

Gregg was 14 at the time of the March 19 shooting. Prosecutors argued she killed her 40-year-old mother, Ashely Smylie, with the mother's gun in the family's home in Brandon, Mississippi. The Clarion Ledger, WLBT and WJTV. The teenager later apparently ambushed her stepfather, 39-year-old Heath Smylie, when he returned home, prosecutors said, according to media reports. Gregg then fled, but was later arrested near the house.

While Gregg's defense attorneys did not deny that she killed her mother, they claimed the teenager was going through a mental health crisis on the day of the murder and could not remember the shooting.

Dr. Andrew Clark, a child psychologist, testified Tuesday, Sept. 17, that Gregg was “grumpy and irritable” on the day of the shooting and was unable to concentrate in class at Northwest Rankin High School, where her mother was a math teacher. The Clarion LedgerClark also said the teenager claimed her memory was “blank” that day after she let her dog into the backyard.

Clark further testified that Gregg was struggling with symptoms of depression and had previously been prescribed medication that made her deaf, The Clarion Ledger reported. Clark also testified that Gregg had been hearing voices that had “gotten worse” before the shooting and that she had self-harmed in the past.

After returning home with her mother, Gregg went straight to her parents' bedroom to retrieve a .357 Magnum pistol from under the mattress, according to courtroom video shown by Court TV, according to prosecutors.

Gregg hid the gun behind her back, went into her own bedroom and confronted her mother, shooting her three times, Mississippi State Attorney Kathryn White Newman said, according to The Clarion Ledger, WLBT and WJTV.

According to Newman, Gregg invited her friend over a short time later. When Gregg opened the door, she asked the friend, “Do you get a bad feeling around dead bodies?” before leading the friend into her bedroom, where Gregg's mother lay dead on the floor after being shot three times, CourtTV and WAPT reported.

During closing arguments earlier this week, prosecutor Michael Smith told the jury that she was aware of her actions at the time of the shooting, according to WAPT.

“We're asking you to go back there and find her guilty on all three counts because she was not insane at the time it happened,” Smith said, according to the outlet. “She knew exactly what she was doing and she knew the difference between right and wrong.”
