Longtime Phoenix Suns commentator Al McCoy has died at the age of 91

PHOENIX – Longtime Phoenix Suns commentator Al McCoy has died at the age of 91, according to a post from the team.

McCoy retired at the end of the 2022-2023 season after serving as a commentator for the team for 51 years.

Growing up as a farm boy in Iowa in the 1940s, McCoy had no electricity and spent his afternoons listening to sports on a handheld radio. His love of radio and sports led him to commentate on games for Drake University, where he attended.

McCoy came to Arizona to commentate on minor league baseball games and ended up with the Suns when they moved to the Valley.

For decades, McCoy commentated on virtually every Suns game, including two runs to the NBA Finals.

Over the course of his career, McCoy was honored with the Curt Gowdy Media Award by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame, the Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame and the Iowa Hall of Pride, among many other prestigious awards.
