Hyannis man arrested in connection with 39 car break-ins

BARNSTABLE – A Hyannis man was arrested in connection with a series of car break-ins, Barnstable police announced Friday.

Jakari Sylvia, 19, is charged in connection with burglaries or attempted burglaries of 21 motor vehicles in the Hyannis area.

The arrest took place on September 19, when Sylvia was on parole after being charged with similar crimes in July. He was accused of targeting 18 vehicles.

Even after Sylvia's release, Barnstable Police continued to receive reports of car break-ins and thefts.

Intensive investigations by detectives and patrol officers, which also included evidence collected at crime scenes and public tips, led to the issuance of an arrest warrant for Sylvia.

The coordinated efforts of the criminal investigation department, the evening shift, the night shift and the dog squad led to the arrest of Sylvia at his residence.

A subsequent search warrant for his home led to the seizure of stolen property in connection with the car break-ins.

Sylvia was arraigned in Barnstable District Court on September 20 on several charges, including attempted and completed auto burglary, theft from a motor vehicle and three counts of auto theft.

Since July, he has been involved in a total of 39 vehicle accidents.

The court ordered Sylvia to be held on $2,250 bail, to be monitored by GPS, and to be placed under a curfew if bail is posted.

The investigation is ongoing and authorities are asking anyone with information to contact Detective Christopher Botsford at 774-339-0764.
