Florida deputy arrested after 'accidentally' shooting girlfriend in the head

A Florida sheriff's deputy reportedly shot his girlfriend while showing her how to clean a gun.

Marion County Sheriff's Deputy Leslie Boileau was drunk and showing his girlfriend Polina Wright, 25, how to clean an AR rifle on Thursday when a loaded bullet shot her in the forehead, Ocala police said.

The armed sheriff told police his deceased girlfriend asked him how to clean a gun and then showed her how to disassemble and clean the rifle and a 9mm pistol, Fox13 reported.

The two then pointed their weapons at each other.

The couple had just returned home from dinner, where they each drank three margaritas, when Boileau spotted the gun cleaning supplies he had recently ordered, the outlet reported. That's when his girlfriend inquired about his gun cleaning routine.

According to the police report, Boileau said he grabbed the rifle and dry fired it once.

“During the second dry-fire attempt, Boileau forgot to put the loaded magazine in the rifle, which fired a live bullet in (his girlfriend's) direction, ultimately killing her,” the police report said.

Boileau then called 911 and reported that he had “accidentally shot his girlfriend,” police said.

Ocala police found Polina dead with a gunshot wound to the head. The pistol was on her lap and the rifle was lying nearby.

Boileau, who has been a deputy for eight years, was arrested and charged with manslaughter, police said. A search of his home found evidence that confirmed his account of the incident.

He was fired immediately after the shooting, the sheriff's office told WESH, confirming that the weapon used in the fatal incident was not his service weapon.

Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said in a statement that Ocala police have the support of his office, Fox reported.

“Tens of thousands of police officers do a commendable job every day,” Woods said. “But unfortunately, the tragic actions of a single officer are felt throughout the entire police community.”

Boileau is being held without bail in the Marion County Jail.
