Teenage cyclist Christian Mireles remains in a coma following the hit-and-run accident in Northlake near Roy and Lyndale Avenue

NORTHLAKE, Ill. (WLS) – A western suburban family spoke of their grief for the first time on Saturday night after a teenage cyclist was one of two boys hit by a car that sped away after the crash.

The hit-and-run accident occurred earlier this month at the corner of Roy and Lyndale Avenue in Northlake.

A 15-year-old boy injured in the accident is still fighting for his life at Loyola Medical Center in Maywood on Saturday.

Since Christian Mireles was hit by a car, the 15-year-old has been in a coma at Loyola Medical Center. His family is at his bedside, hoping that he will pull through.

“Just wake up,” said Christian's sister Dyanna Mireles. “We all miss you so much… There's a big part missing now, and I don't think we could live without that part.”

Since the night of September 11, Christian Mireles’ family has been waiting longingly to hear his voice again.

How could you beat two teenagers and then leave them lying there and die?

“It's indescribable,” said Dyanna. “I really want to hear it.”

The 15-year-old is in an artificial coma.

“It honestly feels like an eternity,” Dyanna said. “It's so devastating to see him just lying there. There's nothing we can do to help him. The only thing we can do is wait.”

The accident occurred as Christian and his 15-year-old friend were riding their bikes back to Christian's house. Police said a driver ignored a stop sign and struck the boys at the intersection.

“I had to run three blocks from my house and saw him get into the ambulance,” Dyanna said.

A police video shows the suspect's white car driving away after the accident, leaving the two friends seriously injured on the sidewalk.

“How could you beat two teenagers, see them lying there and let them die?” Dyanna said.

Christian's friend was also taken to the hospital here but has since been released. Police said they found the suspect car with front-end damage in Elmhurst and arrested the owner of the car. Investigators say the person is not cooperating with police.

“It feels so empty without him,” Dyanna said. “It's so hard for us not having him in the house. Our house doesn't feel like a home. It feels so empty without him.”
