Bird Fight lasts five sets

IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University women's volleyball team continued its PacWest play on Saturday, playing against Fresno Pacific.

CUI took a 2-0 lead, 25-16 and 25-20, but FPU fought back for the rest of the match. The Sunbirds caught up and won the next three sets, 26-24, 25-17 and 15-8.

center Caitlin Jarrell was dominant and led the Golden Eagles with 11 kills and five blocks, two of them solo. Delaney Gregg added four kills and two blocks. Jadyn Orava And Kennedy Farley contributed with nine and seven kills, with a total of nine digs from the back row. Ally Scheidle had six kills and eight digs.

For the second-year student, it was the best game of his career Kayden Croy as she had 10 kills and 16 digs throughout the game. Kawehi Chang distributed 37 assists and 14 digs. The setter reached a career high with five aces and set another record in five sets. Delaney Cracks wore the Libero jersey and had 14 defensive actions while playing as a defensive specialist Celia Dowell had six.

The Green and Gold had plenty of aces on their minds, as they hit a total of 13 aces during the five-set match, which is a team high for the 2024 season. Chang led CUI with five aces, while four other Golden Eagles contributed with at least one. Risse had three, Dowell and Orava had two, and midfielder Gregg had one.

The Golden Eagles will travel up the coast to face defending conference champion Point Loma on Thursday, September 26th at 6 p.m. It is a repeat of last Thursday’s conference opening in Irvine.
