Beatriz Haddad Maia reaches Korea Open semifinals; Raducanu retires

SEOUL, South Korea – Beatriz Haddad Maia reached the rain-delayed semifinals of the Korea Open on Saturday with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Polina Kudermetova.

Haddad Maia finished second at the WTA 500 tournament in Seoul in 2017.

Due to persistent rain showers, all matches on Friday were cancelled, so the quarter-finals and semi-finals had to be played on Saturday.

Kudermetova, 21, played against Haddad Maia on Centre Court, while her sister Veronika Kudermetova, who is 27 and ranked 25th in the world, played against Viktoriya Tomova on Grandstand Court. The older Kudermetova achieved a better result for the family, with Veronika beating Tomova 7-5, 6-3.

Haddad Maia was scheduled to face Veronika Kudermetova in the first semifinal later on Saturday and would have had the chance to beat both Kudermetova sisters on the same day.

In a later quarterfinal, top seed Daria Kasatkina advanced, while former US Open champion Emma Raducanu retired after losing 6-1 in the first set, apparently with an injury to her left foot.

Kasatkina had not lost a set against Raducanu in two previous meetings, including a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the grass-court quarterfinals in Eastbourne three months ago. Raducanu was looking to reach her first semifinal above WTA 250 level since winning the 2021 US Open.

In the other quarterfinal, fourth seed Diana Shnaider played against fifth seed Marta Kostyuk. The winner will play Kasatkina in the semifinal.
