Teenager from Chicago allegedly shot his mother at close range in front of his father and brother

CHICAGO (CBS) — A 17-year-old boy is now charged as an adult in the fatal shooting of his mother in the South Shore neighborhood on Thursday.

Chicago police said he was taken into police custody in the 7000 block of South Cottage Grove shortly before 10 p.m. that same day. The teenager is charged with first-degree murder.

Davion Pryor appeared in court Saturday afternoon. Judge David Kelly was visibly moved as he took over the case, pausing several times to collect himself. He called it a tragedy because prosecutors claimed Pryor shot his mother, 43-year-old Tatanisha Jackson, in front of his family.

Prosecutors say Pryor called Jackson 10 minutes before the shooting, but it was not a threatening call. He called Jackson to tell her someone was drinking on her porch.

Prosecutors say when she arrived at her home on Cornell Avenue in the South Shore neighborhood and unlocked the door, Pryor opened it from the other side and shot her four times in the head at point-blank range.

Prosecutors say Jackson's husband – Pryor's father – and his 7-year-old brother were with her when they picked up the boy from school and were both just steps behind her when she was shot.

The father told investigators that as he picked up the younger boy and called 911, he heard several more gunshots before Pryor came running out a back door.

A man who was finishing work nearby said he heard more than a dozen gunshots.

“Everything was peaceful and then out of the blue there were shots,” said Ronald Jackson. “We heard about eight shots. After the eight shots I thought, 'No, those weren't shots.' Then there were six more.”

Jackson said he recognized pictures of Jackson circulating on social media.

“I've seen her a couple of times. I'm sorry. You know, death in this town is just sad. Every day, every year, it just happens,” he said. “So I feel sorry for her family.”

Rescue workers found Jackson with multiple gunshot wounds to his head and body. They also found twelve bullet casings and a firearm nearby.

Jackson was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

According to police, Pryor fled but turned himself in several hours after the incident.

Prosecutors say Pryor faces two juvenile court cases for aggravated assault and auto theft. He was under house arrest at the time of the shooting and was scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 3.

His grandmother and older half-sister were also in court Saturday. Pryor's grandmother said he had been diagnosed with mental health issues in the past and was no longer taking medication. The judge ordered a psychiatric evaluation as the next step in the case.

Jackson had three sons, Davion and his two younger brothers. She also had an older stepdaughter.

Pryor remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court next Friday.
