NMSP: 1 dead in accident on I-40 near Big-I

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – One person was killed in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 40 near Big-I in Albuquerque on Friday, according to New Mexico State Police.

According to NMSP, someone was driving their Honda Civic eastbound on I-40 and approached Big-I to head north onto Interstate 25. Traffic was backed up in the area. The Civic reportedly failed to slow down and rear-ended a GMC SUV, causing a chain crash involving three other vehicles.

NMSP identified the driver as 26-year-old Chamar Gallegos of Albuquerque. She said she was not wearing a seatbelt and died from injuries sustained in the crash.

No other injuries were reported in the crash, which closed eastbound I-40 for about three hours. The New Mexico State Police are investigating the accident.
