Mother of woman whose body was found in a suitcase on Long Island calls for murder charges

Huntington, New York: — A Long Island mother told CBS News New York exclusively Saturday, weeks after her daughter's body was found in a suitcase, that she would demand more charges against the man who was arrested.

The The remains of 33-year-old Seikeya Jones were found in a suitcase behind a Nassau Road residence on September 2..

The man arrested by police had rented an apartment in the building, but so far he has only been charged with concealing a corpse, meaning that if convicted he could be free again in a few years.

“I want a murder charge because she didn't kill herself,” said Yolanda Terrell, Jones' mother.

So who killed Jones? The police arrested a resident of the building, 41-year-old Ronald Schroeder, at Penn Station on September 6after he went to the Lost and Found office to retrieve his backpack, which investigators said contained illegal drugs.

A grand jury indicted him on charges of illegal possession of a controlled substance and concealing a corpse. He is being held on $500,000 bail and is due back in court in Riverhead on October 16.

“Then he's back out there, running around the street and doing it to someone else,” Terrell said.

How did Seikeya Jones die?

How Jones died is still unclear, as there is no statement from the coroner.

Investigators said her remains were partially decomposed and her wrists and ankles were bound with cord.

Regarding her pain, Terrell said her daughter suffers from mental health issues and struggles with addiction; the last time she spoke to her was on August 16.

“I tried to get her to go back to the hospital. I went to her and said, 'Keya, you really need to get back to the hospital.' And she said, 'I'm not going back to the hospital. The medication is driving me crazy,'” Terrell said.

Terrell said she has not heard from the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office, but in a press statement, District Attorney Ray Tierney wrote, “This case is extremely disturbing. Ms. Jones and her family are entitled to a full investigation. We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to ensure justice is served for the victim and her family.”

“What would you want if it was your own child and someone had done something like that? You would want justice and a murder charge,” Terrell said.

CBS News New York is still waiting for a response from Schröder's lawyer.
